Lockout/Tagout
(13 min.) Years ago, companies had training programs, but nothing like today. Worker comp hadn't been invented just yet. Even back in those days, the owners of the companies used something called lockout. Didn't have fancy tags or even very good locks, but maintenance people were supposed to lock out any electricity that was supporting machinery. Eventually companies utilized what is called lockout and tagout, which added the tags to the procedures. Today, it's called Control of Hazardous Energy Sources. We still call it lockout/tagout, but the official word is Control of Hazardous Energy Sources because more than just electricity needs to be controlled.
Topics discussed in this safety training include: What is lockout/tagout? - addresses all forms of hazardous energy including potential energy electrical energy, thermal energy, important things to remember including three related factors contributing to injuries and deaths, basic tips to include comply with OSHA regulations, implement a hazardous energy control program, identify and label all hazardous energy sources isolate, block, and/or dissipate all forms of hazardous energy, establish lockout/tagout programs requiring individually assigned locks and keys, verify that all energy sources are de-energized before work begins, inspect repair work before reenergizing the equipment, make sure that all persons are clear of danger points before re-energizing the system, train workers in the basic concepts of hazardous energy control.
