Respiratory Safety
(19 min.) The University has established a respiratory protection program for the safety and health of its students and staff. This was done because every working environment cannot be made completely safe from potentially hazardous substances and atmospheres through engineering controls. It is important that you wear a respirator to prevent exposure to airborne hazardous substances. A respirator is used to remove specific air contaminants by passing ambient air through an air purifying element, filter, cartridge, or canister. Respirators are required for students and university staff who work with hazardous materials and who have a potential for exposure to these hazardous materials.
Topics covered in this safety video include: respiratory hazards, authorization, respirator selection, filter cartridges, medical monitoring, education and training, respiratory fit test, daily test, qualitative test, testing agents, quantitative test, protection factors, respirator care, inspection, maintenance, exposure assessment, record keeping, environments requiring a respirator, dusts, smoke and fumes, spray and mists, not enough oxygen, gases and vapors, types of respirators available, half face piece masks, type of filters, full face piece-mask respirators, and donning a 3m respirator.
