Ergonomics in Industrial Environments

Ergonomics in Industrial Environments (33 min.) This course outlines the approach most commonly recommended for identifying and correcting ergonomic problems. It provides basic information that will be useful for employers, workers and others in designing effective programs to prevent Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) in an industrial environment. This course addresses one of the most prevalent and costly safety and health problems in the modern workplace and provides useful information for putting a program into place. In this training program, we're going to discuss only one part of a good Industrial Safety program. It''s called Ergonomics. Ergonomics is nothing new; there have been a number of improvements and advancements in the study of Ergonomics in recent years.

Topics included in this safety video are: defining ergonomics: how it applies to you, elements of an ergonomic program including (step 1: problem recognition, step 2: management commitment, step 3: training, step 4: gathering data, step 5: identifying effective controls, step 6: establishing healthcare management, step 7: minimizing known risk factors, step 8: controlling workplace hazards), problem recognition in an industrial environment, employee training, gathering workplace ergonomic data, developing workplace controls, examples of engineering controls, administrative controls, personal protective equipment (PPE), establishing healthcare management, minimizing known risk factors, controlling workplace hazards, occupational and personal risk factors, general workstation design principles, design principles for repetitive hand and wrist tasks, design to reduce, design to avoid, design principles for lifting and lowering tasks, design to optimize or reduce (design principles for pushing and pulling tasks, eliminate pushing or pulling, reduce the force required to push or pull), require that hand-trucks or dollies be used, require that floor surfaces be clean, optimize the technique of the push or pull, breaks and personal exercises, lifestyle changes and improvements, and your safety program.
